Dressing Challenges - which is your body shape?

What are your considerations in choosing an outfit for the day?  Is it the events you will be attending, the weather, the people you will be meeting or simply your mood??  For me, the first consideration would be the type of Body Shape I have before the rest of the above considerations.  I need the outfit to fit me well first!  I have written on First Impressions, so let us look at how we can create an impactful first impression through dressing to your bodyshape!

There are different school of teaching on how we classify the different body shapes.  However, below are quick tip for each bodyshape you can equip yourself with!

1.       Hourglass

Your asset is the waistline!  Always choose an outfit/top/jacket with indentation at the waist area.  If the top flow straight down pass the waist, you will seem bigger than what you actually are.

2.       Figure of Eight

Your asset is the waistline too and you have the slim legs that make many women green with envy!  Your high hip bone is crucial in determining where your skirt/pants sit.

3.       Rectangle

Your asset is the broad and strong shoulders.  Emphasize on the collars and jewelries you place here as this is where you want people to look.

4.       Triangle

With narrow shoulders and broad hips, wear outfits that can buff up your shoulders such as puff up sleeves and detailing near the shoulders so as to create a balanced look with the hips.

5.       Inverted Triangle

With broad shoulders and narrow hips, wear bottoms that create volume at your hips.  You will look like an hourglass!

6.       Oval

This bodyshape can be challenging to dress but following a technique or two conscientiously will totally distract others from your shape!  Use column of colour where you can start off with a solid coloured dress or top and a long vest on the outside.  The column of colour created at the centre slims you down and divert attention from the sloppy shoulders, rounded waist and full tummy/hips.

So don’t do injustice to yourself!  Any clothes will look good on you as long as it looks like it’s tailor made for you!  You can also contact Image Professionals to give you more indepth and customized analysis of your bodyshape.  It’s knowledge for life that you will be thankful for!

How old should dressing well starts?

If it were 20 years ago, dressing well started only from the moment we can go shopping.  However, if you look around in the malls today, parents have started dressing their young kids as early as when they are born!  Will dressing well at such a young age influence the child’s attitude and shopping habits as they grow up?

I don’t have to look far, just by looking at my children, I noticed their awareness towards dressing compared to my younger days.

1)      My daughters will ask for their nails to be painted when it comes to festive season or school holidays.

2)      They will point out to girls who are wearing nice dresses when we are out.

3)      They will pester me to buy accessories when they see nice or cute ones.

4)      They will ask me to buy certain dresses/clothes as they form their own perception of what are considered pretty.

5)      They want to choose their own clothes to go out or even to sleep!

6)      They perceived certain hairstyle I tie for them as nice or not nice.

7)    My younger girl even innocently said she wanted to be a dressing table when she grow up! (!?!)

I also have a friend whose mother dressed her up since young.  She is well travelled and her mother loves to dress up too.  Now that my friend is an adult, she is always impeccably dressed and it looks effortless!  With her friendly and easy going personality, she always leaves a deep impression in others and enjoy smooth luck with her career.

On the other hand, as a stewardess with Singapore Airlines for 5 and a half years, it was drilled into us that grooming was of utmost importance, together with the soft skills to shape our attitude.  It becomes alittle tedious on those who never had strict regime on grooming that they will be struggling during the first few years.  You even get picked on if your grooming is not impeccable!  Having chosen Image Consulting as a career for the last 8years, I have acknowledged the fact that people around judge.  Most people won’t have a chance to know you well during the first meeting and it’s your physical self that decides what impression you leave in them.

So how old should dressing well start?  I definitely feel that it will put a person on a competitive edge if this is instilled in them since young and they can focus on that personality, attitude, knowledge and education to bring them further in life!
